Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO) The K- Wave

K for Korea. Hence K- Pop, K- Drama, K- movies and they have taken over my social media completely. Memes, video snippets, gif, gossip, breaking news.

Honestly, I’m at sea. I have seen only one Korean film, Train to Busan, that too long ago.

I had loved it.

It had drama, high octane action, a poker face lead actor with legs as long as Amitabh Bachchan and zombies!

Yes, those zombies were terrifying and deadly. A mindless, killing horde that ran faster than Usain Bolt. The film was all about survival of the fittest.

“It’s Halloween, everyone’s entitled to one good scare.”

Brackett

I say, go for it. A perfect Halloween watch!

From K- movie to K-drama, perhaps my first ever Korean TV drama, Squid Game on Netflix is to be blamed. The hype around it was killing.

Also, I suppose the ‘zombies on the train’ movie did such a fabulous job, I was excited to watch the TV series.

It had a decent enough storyline, kept me invested enough to see it to its end. Reminded me of Hunger Games with the odds heavily stacked against our ragtag team of losers. Also simple games with a deadly twist for the participants, bring it on! I know, I will never see a tug of war in the same light. It was bloody and thrilling.

Did I mention, there were also a million subplots that were too distracting?

An organ harvesting scheme. A Lone Ranger cop infiltrating this secret setup. Trigger happy mysterious guards in red uniforms who cannot speak. No context on the boss running the show.

Aargh!

They all felt like loose threads hanging from an eye catching tapestry.

Anyway, everyone is going crazy over this series or at least my social media leads me to believe. I also hear great stuff about other K-drama rom-coms. The world seem to be riding the hallyu (Korean wave), word of the day. Perhaps that’s why I’m inclined to give it a fair chance.

So calling out to folks into this genre, are you into K- dramas or K-movies? A Squid Game fan or some other drama tugs your heart strings? What should I watch next? Let’s chat.

  1. Kudos to your k homage! Except for the Hallyu wave, haven’t checked anything, despite of a big itch:)

    1. Manjari, you are full of surprises. I had no idea that you were interested. I suppose they are to us what Bollywood used to be for the world a few years back, an exotic candy! Is that even a word? Will definitely keep you updated with my new finds. Have a memorable day😊. It’s Halloween 👻

  2. Read your last two posts on reviews of movie and series. Found them to be crisp and far better than most that appear on newsfeed. The clarity with which you have conveyed what to expect is really helpful. Great work Sheetal.

  3. I am so out of touch with games and movies, Sheetal. I’ve never been a gamer, and I think it was your good self who suggested I see the Bond movie. Really enjoyed it, and I watched the trailers and thought several films looked good. Highly improbable I’ll get there though. Perhaps on a rainy day…

    1. No problem, Jo. I blame the COVID stay at home stint for making me a series addict. The streaming giants opened a whole new world for me. As for Bond, I’m really pleased that it was my first film on the big screen after that long hiatus. So happy you enjoyed it too. Perhaps it’s just finding the right one that takes you on a roller coaster ride. Have a great day!

  4. I’m going to be very late to the party as I haven’t seen Squid Game, although I’ve heard a lot about it. I do like a good K-horror movie though, and always prefer the Korean original to any American remakes. So I’m behind on K drama, K pop etc but thanks to having teenage daughters I’m well versed in K- beauty…so I haven’t missed the trend entirely!

    1. Hey Helen! I’m new to the K-party so it’s fun discovering what the hullabaloo is. As for the K-beauty, that bug is yet to bite me. My kid outgrew her K-phase except for Squid Game which I was egged into watching by her. As I said, its hype is incredible!
I was keen to catch up on your last recommendation- Generation War but unfortunately it isn’t available here. Anyway, looking forward to some more recommendations and thanks so much for stopping by. Always a pleasure. 😊
